WHAT Abdominoplasty CAN CORRECT?
Abdominoplasty will remove loose, excess skin and liposuction can remove fat deposits from the abdomen. It also repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles. The result is a smoother, flatter abdominal contour. It can be mini where the umbilicus is not repositioned or full Abdominoplasty where it will be repositioned. Liposuction at the same time will ensure a smoother contour.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR Abdominoplasty?
Dr Tsang will meet and discuss the procedure and get a better idea of your specific body contouring needs. This information is then used to determine whether you are a good fit for Abdominoplasty and the type of Abdominoplasty.
Generally, Abdominoplasty candidates are individuals who:
- Are in good physical, medical and psychological health
- Non smoker
- Do not have a medical contra-indication to surgery
- Do not plan to become pregnant (future pregnancies can reverse the results of Abdominoplasty)
- Understand the possible risks and complications
- Have specific and reasonable goals of surgery
- Excess skin after significant weight loss
HOW A Abdominoplasty WORKS?
Abdominoplasty is performed on an inpatient basis. The procedure time will depend on the complexity of the surgery.
Traditional Abdominoplasty involves making an incision in the lower abdomen skin crease from hip bone to hip bone, right above the pubic area. The Scar is generally concealed beneath underwear or a bathing suit bottom.
Through the incision, Dr. Tsang removes excess fat and skin. He also tightens weakened or separated abdominal muscles if required to repair any divarication of rectus sheath. An incision around the belly button may also be required to reposition it. Finally, Dr. Tsang will re-drape the abdominal skin more tightly across the abdomen and close the incisions with sutures.
COMBINING Abdominoplasty WITH LIPOSUCTION
Dr. Tsang believes that the Gold standard to this surgery is to combine liposuction with abdominoplasty termed lipo-abdominoplasty. This will ensure the most aesthetically pleasing outcome with an easier recovery. Liposuction is helpful to preserve a lot of the original blood supply to the abdominal wall skin and fat. Also, the results are superior. The patient enjoys much more of a waistline, recovers faster and there are very few complications.
Abdominoplasty RECOVERY
The first few days of Abdominoplasty recovery will be the toughest. You will be sore, swollen and bruised. You will be wearing a binder to keep the tissue in place. However, these side effects subside over time. Dr. Tsang will prescribe oral pain medication to take if you need it. You are expected to mobilise as soon as you can. Short walks within one to two days of surgery are encouraged for good circulation. After 1 weeks you are expected to wear a garment for 6 weeks or more.
You can resume light activity when it feels comfortable (usually 10 to 20 days after surgery), but avoid vigorous exercise or sports activities for approximately six weeks.
Abdominoplasty RISKS
Though any surgical procedure carries some risk, rest assured that you lower the risk of complications by working with a surgeon like Dr. Tsang who has ample experience in looking after surgical patients.
Minor complications that do not affect the ultimate outcome occur occasionally, and major complications are very unusual.
Possible complications include:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Hematoma/seroma
- Changes in skin sensation
- Unfavorable scarring
- Asymmetry requiring touch up surgery
During your preoperative consultation Dr. Tsang will explain the possible Abdominoplasty risks, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Abdominoplasty FAQS
SHOULD I LOSE WEIGHT BEFORE HAVING Abdominoplasty SURGERY?
Gaining a substantial amount of weight after abdominoplasty can counteract the aesthetic benefits of the procedure. For this reason, you should be at or slightly above your ideal body-weight before undergoing Abdominoplasty surgery. Likewise, women should wait until they are finished having children before having the procedure.
HOW MUCH TIME WILL I NEED TO TAKE OFF FROM WORK?
You should arrange to take about two weeks off from work or your everyday schedule after Abdominoplasty surgery. Light walking and household duties.
WHEN ARE THE RESULTS OF Abdominoplasty SURGERY NOTICEABLE?
Some of the sculpting results of Abdominoplasty surgery are noticeable immediately. However, it takes about three to five months for the final results to become actualized, as this is how long it takes for the body to heal completely and for any residual swelling to improve. The scar can be slightly red to begin with but colour will fade over time.
WHAT IS THE COST OF Abdominoplasty SURGERY?
Abdominoplasty costs vary slightly from patient to patient, depending on the complexity of the person’s anatomical needs and surgical goals. For instance, Dr. Tsang might need to include liposuction in some patients’ Abdominoplasty procedure; others may be appropriate candidates for a modified Abdominoplasty approach that is less extensive than traditional abdominoplasty.
However, unlike other surgeons that might only quote their own fee, Dr. Tsang quoted price is comprehensive and includes the surgeon’s fee, Assistant fee and Anaesthetist fee.
